The Canebrake 2009 Golf Preview was a great success. Thanks to all of you who attended and participated... especially to all the speakers, including MGA President Ray Neese and Golf Professional Josh Gardner, Events Planner Anna Kennemer, Shop Merchandiser Cari Bledsoe and Membership Director Alice Dunnavant. We also appreciate sales reps Tom Brown of Bionic Glove, Ecco Shoe, AM&E and Power-Bilt and Callaway Golf's Doug Shoerke for their efforts.
A very special "Thank you" goes out to our guest speaker, Golf DIgest Top 50 Instructor and my friend, Mr. Hank Johnson. Besides working with several PGA and LPGA Tour Players, Hank is the Master Instructor for Hank JohnsonSchool of Golf which operates at Greystone in Birmingham and the Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club in Destin, Florida.
Professional Josh Gardner covered a littany of items in the golf area. Then Hank gave his very enlightening talk aimed at helping our members better understand their golf goals and how to achieve them.

A native of Alabama, Hank currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama where he is Director of Golf Instruction at Greystone Golf and Country Club. Hank is Research Consultant for American Sports Medicine Institute. He is Founder and Master Instructor of the Hank Johnson School of Golf which operates at Greystone and the Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club in Destin, Florida.
Hank, a twenty-year veteran of the Golf Digest Golf School Program, has authored numerous articles for Golf Digest, including ten cover stories. He is recognized as one of Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers and one of Golf Digest Magazine’s Top 50 Teachers. Hank has been a member of the PGA since 1973 and in 2001 was inducted into The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Hank was selected as the 2004 National PGA Teacher of the year.
Hank’s book, How to Win the Three Games of Golf with Roger Schiffman, Executive Editor of Golf Digest was released in August 1993 by Golf Digest/New York Times Special Services, Inc. and Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. This book features a revolutionary approach to learning the golf swing and has received strong national interest. Many top professional and amateur players use it as a training manual.
Through his association with American Sports Medicine Institute, Hank has provided a more in-depth understanding of the biomechanics of the golf swing to the national golf community. A much sought after speaker, he has conducted seminars on “The Physical Aspects of Golf” for golf professionals, golf coaches, physicians and physical therapists throughout the country and was a featured speaker at the 2002 and 2004 PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit.
His many students have included PGA Tour players Steve Lowery Winner of the 2008 PGA Tour AT&T Championship, Hubert Green, Tom Purtzer and Tom Kite as well as LPGA Tour player Sherri Steinhauer 2006 Womens British Open Champion and Winner of the 2007 LPGA State Farm Classic. Other LPGA player students have included Nancy Scranton, Shani Waugh, Siew Ai Lim, Marisa Baena, Dale Eggeling and Michelle Estill. He has also coached Celebrity Players Tour tournament winner Al DelGreco and Auburn University All-American and 2003 and 2005 US Walker Cup Team Member Lee Williams. In 2006, Lee Williams was also Leading Money Winner and Player of the Year on the US PRO Golf Tour. Lee Williams is 2008 Alabama Open Champion and is currently competing on the Nationwide Tour.
Hank is a five time winner of the Dixie PGA Horton Smith Award, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1983, 2006, for his contributions to golf education. He was selected 1984 “Professional of the Year” by the Alabama Golf Association and 1985 “Professional of the Year” by the Dixie PGA. Hank has also served on the faculty of numerous National PGA education programs and was selected as the 1997 Dixie Section PGA Teacher of the Year. Hank was a member of the 2002 and 2004 PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit Task Force. He was also an instructor at the PGA 2004 Advanced Teaching Seminar in Orlando, Florida.
Hank played collegiate golf at Auburn University where he was runner up in the 1962 Southeastern Conference Championship. Hank competed in the 1969 US Open and National PGA Club Professional Championships in 1973, 1980, and 1982 when he was low qualifier from the Dixie PGA. Hank has also played in three Senior PGA Tour events, the 1993, 1995 and 1996 Bruno’s Memorial Classics in Birmingham, Alabama.
