Canebrake Connections, January 2009
Jack Sauers, GM
Happy New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! On behalf of the entire staff at Canebrake, I’d like to wish you and your family a fabulous 2009. I would also like to thank you for your generous contributions to the Canebrake employee Christmas fund.

We have been planning some events to keep you entertained during these long winter nights. Some of these events are:

  • Dance Lessons: Helen and Jack Greenhaw are going to teach us some new moves. The dance lessons will be January 19, 26, February 2 and 10 from 7 to 8:30pm. Call or email Alice to enroll.
  • Valentine’s Dinner Dance: You’ll have a chance to celebrate with your sweetheart and unveil some of your new dance steps.
  • Wine and Dine: A prime rib dinner along with some new wines to tease your palate
  • A Valentine’s Day Couples golf event.
  • Our first Golf “Preview” on February 9th.

During the winter months we will be reducing our restaurant hours of operation. Please check the calendar on line if you are in doubt. Although the hours are reduced, Chef Ron has planned some special dining events for you during the winter.

In addition, Chef Ron is planning a new menu and welcomes your input. Please submit your suggestions to him by February 1st. Our new menu will be introduced in early March.

Leeandra Brown has been promoted to handle all member billing and accounting questions. Please call her if you have any billing issues. Leeandra has done an outstanding job and proven to be very capable and multitalented. She worked at Canebrake initially in the F & B department.

Lloyd Rex, C.P.A., is heading up our accounting office. Lloyd has been an Athens resident nearly four years. He has a long history of heading up accounting offices around the country.

I am happy to announce that Anna Kennemer has agreed to serve as our Event Coordinator. Anna has prior experience, serving at Rock Creek Golf Club in Mobile in a similar capacity. She is in the process of working with Chef Casey to develop our 2009 events package. Anna may be reached at the club at option 6 or dialing directly 444-9045.

70s Party a Blast from the Past!

The Canebrake 70s Party was a big hit. Almost everyone came in costume to help set the mood for the evening. It was a trip back in time and had many of our members out on the dance floor feeling young again, perhaps explaining the surge in Advil and Absorbine Jr. sales on Saturday.

A special thanks to Lisa Noah and Frank Crafts for their help in selecting the food, music and decorations. The Canebrake staff is also to be commended for their efforts in decorating and "creating the mood"… especially Sheila Renfro.

Ray and Carlene Neese set the pace early, unveiling many of their well rehearsed dance moves. As the evening wore on, David and Angela McKenzie took charge of the floor and displayed some "nifty" footwork. Carl Hunt and Paul "Cheech" Taroli labored in the audio/ visual department, keeping the walls adorned with continuously updated photographs of the party goers. That was a big hit as the dancers and spectators alike delighted in checking themselves out on the big screen. Alston Noah was standing tall in his white shoes and Dave Mathias was thoroughly disguised as a true 70s character.

We could go on endlessly telling of the shenanigans and regalia of the evening, but the pictures will tell you more than we could ever relate.

Emergency Sirens
Emergency Alert Sirens Installed
GREAT NEWS FROM EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT

Thanks to the efforts of Athens City Councilman and Canebrake resident, Harold Wales, the city has installed a set of emergency alert sirens on the south side of Lindsay Lane, just south of the construction entrance. These sirens can be heard in all directions for up to five miles. Our thanks to Harold for his efforts. Now, when severe weather or other emergencies threaten, Canebrake residents will be warned along with other Athens residents.
